The lines are getting longer at public libraries across the country as parents and their children queue up for Story Time. According to a report in the New York Times, “Story time is drawing capacity crowds at public libraries across New York and across the country at a time when, more than ever, educators are emphasizing the importance of early literacy in preparing children for school and for developing critical thinking skills. The demand crosses economic lines, with parents at all income levels vying to get in.”

What’s driving this renewed interest in Story Time at Public Libraries?

As the report notes, “Sari Feldman, president of the American Library Association, said such early literacy efforts are part of a larger transformation libraries are undergoing to become active learning centers for their communities by offering services like classes in English as a second language, computer skills and career counseling. Ms. Feldman said the increased demand for story time was a product, in part, of more than a decade of work by the library association and others to encourage libraries to play a larger role in preparing young children for school. In 2004, as part of that effort, the association developed a curriculum, ‘Every Child Ready to Read,’ that she said is now used by thousands of libraries.”

Another interesting article by Dr. Stephen Krashen can be found here.
The lesson here is that parents more than ever want their children to be ready for school and books and reading helps make that happen. We at The Latino Family Literacy Project welcome this growing interest in Story Time.

A New Framework for Hispanic Parent Programs

The program was more ongoing and gave the parents a lot of feedback on how to help their children.

Now that Parent Involvement is such a strong national focus, it is important to provide teachers with a whole new framework for Hispanic Parent Programs, if we want parents and kids to become life long readers.

Harris County Department of Education formed the Cooperative for After-School Enrichment, or CASE, in 1999 to mobilize the community to work together to ensure that every child in Harris County has access to an after-school program.

CASE develops and implements a variety of programs to serve students, families, schools and communities:

21st Century Community Learning Centers

Partnership Project

After-School Initiative

CASE AmeriCorps

ENRICH After-School

This testimonial video was filmed at Westwood Elementary school to demonstrate that Spanish-speaking parents benefit greatly from participating in The Latino Family Literacy Project at their child’s school site.

</ BR>

Harris County Office of Education, with CASE and 21st Century programs collaborated to provide Parent Involvement Programs at Spring Branch.

Parents may not have strong reading skills in their own background, but once they are taught the importance of reading, along with strategies for sharing books, and are provided with books that they love, parents are so excited to read with their children. A big part of our program outcomes is that parents are provided life-changing skills and training for becoming life long readers. That’s why bilingual books are so important in our literacy programs, because it’s one way to help Spanish speaking parents read with their children, while developing English together as a family.

Teachers who come to our workshops learn the difference between hosting a one-time workshop at their school for parents, versus an ongoing approach to family reading and literacy development. Another big reason for attending a workshop is to understand the parents in a whole new way. Teachers leave our workshops with a new framework for family reading with bilingual families.

Parents who are Spanish-speakers and English-speakers enjoy these bilingual books with their children because these stories are culturally relevant and meaningful. And that means that they have so much more to talk about when they read them with their children. These books are in our Parent & Family Engagement Programs and our focus is to help parents learn to read and discuss stories for comprehension, vocabulary development in Spanish and/or English and ESL. We’ve got research to share that our programs really work!

Creating a Title III Program at your District-

The U.S. Department of Education requires that public schools and state agencies act to overcome the language barriers that impede equal participation by students in their instructional programs.

In a letter dated January 7, 2015 titled Dear Colleague Letter: English Learner Students and Limited English Proficient Parents, The U.S. Department of Education comments:

“Ensuring that SEAs and school districts are equipped with the tools and resources to meet their responsibilities to LEP students, who are now more commonly referred to as English Learner (EL) students or English Language Learner students, is as important today as it was then. EL students are now enrolled in nearly three out of every four public students, and all students, have equal access to a high-quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential. We applaud those working to ensure equal educational opportunities for EL students, as well as the many schools and communities creating programs that recognize the heritage languages of EL students as valuable assets to preserve.”

The Latino Family Literacy Project specializes in programs for English Learners and Parent Involvement. We can train staff to provide programs for parents at your school, and we help teachers to understand the Hispanic parents using a whole new framework for participation. Our focus is to help parents learn to read with their children and develop English vocabulary together as a family.

The books in our program are published by Lectura Books and are designed to engage English Learner parents by structuring the culturally relevant stories and vocabulary review in each book to assist parents in accomplishing their goals with reading with their children and teaching vocabulary.

If you would like to schedule a teacher workshop at your district, please contact The Latino Family Literacy Project at: 1-877-LECTURA or by email.
