Latino Family Literacy Project Celebration

The Latino Family Literacy Project hosted by Kilgore Intermediate School concluded a nine week program for parents of Spanish speaking students recently with a celebration meal and awards presented by Andy Adams, KIS Principal and Joy Swetnam, KISD ESL
Director.

Parents met weekly to learn reading strategies and how to establish a family reading routine with their children at home. They shared stories and experiences and made a family album during the class that reflects the reading and family time they are sharing at home.

Kilgore High School student members of Future Hispanic Leaders of America assisted Mrs. Swetnam with childcare during the adult training conducted by Amanda Mohn, KIS ESL Specialist. Mrs. Mohn was assisted by Rosemary Ramirez and Blanca Cervantes, bilingual educational aides at KIS.

Completion awards and gift bags were presented to: Gabriel Almanza, Blanca Armendáriz, Erica Cardosa, Baciliza Cedillo, Maria Chavez, Maria Teresa Gallardo, Norma Martínez, Eugenio Ponce, Laura Rodriguez and Teresa Rojas. KHS FHLA President, Javier Aguilar, was awarded a Leadership Award for Community Service. Other FHLA members who were awarded certificates for community service were: Gustavo Espinoza, Romeo Espinoza, Maribel Herrera, Laura Naranjo, Marisol Rangel, Evelyn Requena, Jaime Reyes,
Valeria Rodriguez Sanchez, Emma Torres, Edgar Torres and Elizabeth Trejo.
